Geachte, beste, lieve, hallo,

Na 11 jaar met bijzonder veel plezier samen ontwerpen, maken we in het nieuwe jaar een nieuwe start.
Omdat nieuw heel fijn kan zijn en alles weer even op scherp zet.

Rene gaat verder als grafisch ontwerper onder de naam ‘Anagramme’, Eva wordt ‘In Edition’.

Wij danken jullie erg, als twee Novakjes, voor de mooie samenwerkingen, strakke deadlines, interessante gesprekken en zo veel meer.
Rene en Eva maken nog een aantal projecten samen en zullen dan (echt) individueel verder gaan.

En hopen dat we jullie in het nieuwe jaar natuurlijk nog steeds mogen verblijden met al het moois in de fijne wereld van het grafisch ontwerp.

The Factory of Forms
A relational vehicle by Elena Bajo
Accompanying her presentation at Onomatopee’s ‘Who told you so?!’ exhibition we made this publication for Spanish Artist Elena Bajo.

After a first misbound edition (top image) it was decided to redesign the cover for the second printing (second image). Also a section of 32 pages was added, making this book a strange blend of lay-outs, implemented ‘ready-mades’ and design concept awkwardness.. yea!

Van perspectief tot 3D.

De ontwikkeling van de architectuurtekening.
Architecture critic and curator Marlies Buurman invited us to think about the design for the exhibition ‘Van perspectief tot 3D’ (From perspective to 3D), on the history and future of 3D architecture drawing.

Derived from self drawn axometrics, Studio Dave Keune made the design for two units on which all material is presented.
Outlining all edges and corners on these units and the exhibition space itselve creates the illusion of being in a 3D model yourself.

The fourth edition in the STATEMENTS series. Colour specialist Rob van Maanen wrote this book on colour as an instrument for urban development, city landscape and architecture; with a foreword by Hans Ibelings.

Seven photographic series in the book are grouped and shown as a six page fold-out.

Levend landschap
Hans Teerds and Johan van der Zwart wrote this Manifest voor stad en land.
We used Revive and Sirio Color Celeste blue paper to seperate the different sections in the book, each in its own PMS colour. Together with capitals and underlines the manifesto character is emphasized.

Conversation Pieces
We were invited by Krijn Christiaansen and Cathelijne Montens to collaborate on a project for the Wallace Gallery in London. Together with Joris Landman, Goele Dewanckel, Atelier NL, Marina de Campo and K C C M a series of ‘Conversation Pieces’ in ceramics was created for a fundraiser auction for the Wallace Gallery. Five weeks of ceramic making in the EKWC in Den Bosch.. a great place with great staff.

The concept was to translate pottery objects from Dutch Masters 17th century paintings to real life, put them together to form a new composition and then add the illusion of light and shadow by glazing the objects as if they were standing in a striking light; just like in the paintings they came from.

The work is still in progress.. several objects were damaged in the kiln and a new skin of white glazing will be applied the coming month.

Haiiro
A photographic series in Karianne Bueno style. We collaborated on the design, which turned out to be a 15 page leporello inside a linnen bound hard cover.
The title on the cover is an adhesive applied in an embossed frame.

For De Volkskrant, Merel Bem wrote a four-star review (pdf link). “She does it again..”.

‘Haiiro’ meaning ‘grey’ in Japanese, with images from this country, Japan:
“..the work is intended to convey the emotion of longing for elsewhere. In concrete terms, the photos include cityscapes, koi fish, surburban power lines, and natural settings of trees, crops, and oceans. The artist accompanies the photos with a short text, in vignette form, offering us insight only into her emotional state as she experiences the world around her, from an alienated perspective.” – GUP magazine

The book is launched during Paris Photo at OffPrint and celebrated with an exhibition at Liefhertje en de Grote Witte Reus in The Hague.

This is the poster slash reader for Sophie Krier’s project in Luxembourg’s Plateau Kirchberg.
Several artists were invited to intersect the public domain in the country’s capital city. Atelier Sophie Krier created a pièce sonore, inspired by Luxemburg’s culture.

A book, published by SUN, about ‘Cultural / Political Theory; Street Photography’ an interpretation by George Baird.

This book was originally supposed to be small: A6+. When decided it should be bigger, a white frame space was added around the existing lay-out, leaving the lay-out as it was.
A great street photography folio is printed in FC in the otherwise all black printed book.

The booklet is printed in one colour, black. A seperate sheet is printed seperately in full colour. The images matching the black images in the booklet.
When inserted in the book, little details of a product/project are highlighted by the FC insert.

ARCAM in de Brakke Grond
Every two months a coupled lecture is organised by ARCAM. Architects are invited to talk and tell about their fascinations, inspirations and their love for the craft.
The first speaker is invited by ARCAM, the second is appointed by the first speaker.

Novak created a design concept in which coupled images are consequently displayed in PMS overprint. These images can be conventional portfolio based, but inspiration and quote based as well.. resulting in a bit more poetry in the series.

Standard Primitives
On show in Milan, Standard Primitives, the new collection of modular furniture objects by studio Dave Keune, consists of different bright and pure, interchangeable elements. Standard Primitives doesn’t prescribe how things should be, but how things could be.

Novak made a rotation offset tabloid as catalogue. Non-bound, the tabloid can be taken apart as seperate sheets. Folded they express the interchangeable character of the objects: making new combinations.

Roel Huisman exhibited his new products at the Salone di Mobile 2010 in Milan: ‘Assembly Seats’, ‘Escapement Rocker’ and ‘Shade for Shelter’.
Each product had a sheet, all of them to be bundled in a pre-printed enveloppe.

Studio Roel Huisman
For Amsterdam based theatre, interior and product designer Roel Huisman a ‘bussiness’ identity was developed existing of an A5 self-adhesive, instead of a conventional letterhead, bussiness card and enveloppe.

The illustration on the sticker is not shaped by print, but by front slit in the material – resulting in a collection of tear-offs for building, composing and construction.

Photographer Jan-Dirk van der Burg was commissioned by the province of Groningen to make a series. He chose to document the elections in local Grongen city and surrounding villages.

The text-part of this book is designed like a pamphlet and printed in 3 sepereate ways: three different colours – pick one up and your political choice is made.

We came up with the title for this project ourselves, while it actually is a duo-identity for product designers Krijn Christiaansen & Cathelijne Montens.

Instead of conventional offset, we made a series of stamps for both of them: 5 for Krijn and 6 for Cathelijne. All of them to be combined with the pre-printed A4 letterhead: a green square for Krijn and a reddish circle for Cathelijne.
In this way, the identity becomes ‘storytelling’.

‘Wat me aanspreekt is de koppeling van traditie met de huidige tijd.’

Designers Krijn Christiaansen and Cathelijne Montens did a very pretty and clever project on a Dutch landmark in rural landscapes: wooden gates. Collecting old wood materials from farmer’s barns and sheds and bringing them together to form a new typology with the same shape, is what they did. And it turned out really well.
This book is an overview of the project’s process, and – a book in a book: photographic essay by Nicole Segers and Irene van der Linde.
